Getting Started
What happens in the first session?
Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation for our work together. We’ll explore your current concerns, personal history, goals for therapy, and any immediate support needs. We’ll also review confidentiality, informed consent, and how virtual therapy works. Most importantly, we’ll begin identifying what healing and growth look like for you, at a pace that feels safe and supportive.
How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?
The therapeutic relationship is one of the most important factors in successful therapy. We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation so you can ask questions, learn more about our approach, and determine whether working together feels like a good fit. We encourage you to trust your instincts and choose a therapist who feels aligned with your needs, goals, and values.
How often should we meet?
Therapy is tailored to your individual needs and circumstances. Many clients begin with weekly sessions to build consistency, support stabilization, and create momentum toward their goals. As progress is made, some clients transition to biweekly or monthly sessions. Together, we’ll create a schedule that supports your healing while fitting into your daily life.
What can I expect from virtual therapy?
Virtual therapy offers the same compassionate, evidence-based support as in-person counseling, with the added convenience of meeting from the comfort of your own space. Sessions are conducted through a secure telehealth platform and can include traditional talk therapy, somatic interventions, grounding exercises, and practical skill-building tailored to your needs.
Therapy & Approach
Is online therapy effective?
Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy is highly effective for treating anxiety, trauma, grief, stress, depression, and many other mental health concerns. Virtual therapy allows us to provide trauma-informed and somatic-based care while helping clients access support in a way that is flexible, comfortable, and accessible throughout California.
What is somatic therapy?
Somatic therapy is a therapeutic approach that recognizes the connection between the mind and body. Stress, trauma, grief, and chronic anxiety often affect the nervous system and can become stored physically within the body. Somatic therapy helps increase awareness of these patterns while teaching practical tools for nervous system regulation, emotional resilience, and lasting healing.
What issues do you help clients with?
We support women, young adults, professionals, and individuals throughout California who are navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, burnout, chronic illness, life transitions, medical trauma, relationship challenges, and emotional overwhelm. We also offer specialized support for individuals affected by cancer through our oncology-focused services and support groups.
Do you only talk and listen, or will I receive practical tools?
Our approach is active, collaborative, and personalized. While therapy provides a supportive space to process emotions and experiences, we also integrate practical tools, coping strategies, somatic exercises, and evidence-based interventions that you can use between sessions and in daily life. Our goal is to help you create meaningful, sustainable change both inside and outside the therapy room.
Can therapy help if I don't have a specific diagnosis?
Absolutely. Many people seek therapy because they feel stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of how to move forward. You do not need a diagnosis to benefit from therapy. Therapy can provide support during life transitions, relationship difficulties, personal growth, grief, stress, and periods of uncertainty.
Logistics & Investment
Can I use my out-of-network benefits for potential therapy reimbursement?
Yes! We partner with Mentaya, a platform that helps clients get money back on out-of-network therapy sessions by submitting claims to their insurance provider. If you qualify, Mentaya will file claims and handle the insurance paperwork; they do everything in their power to get you reimbursed. For example, if you have a $1,000 out-of-network deductible, your insurance will reimburse 50-80% of the session cost.
Is virtual therapy confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is extremely important to us. Virtual sessions are conducted through secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms and remain confidential within legal and ethical guidelines. Exceptions include situations involving imminent risk of harm, suspected abuse of a child or vulnerable adult, or court-ordered disclosures. We review confidentiality and its limitations before beginning treatment.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. We do not prescribe medication. If medication may be a helpful part of your treatment plan, we can collaborate with your physician or provide referrals to qualified psychiatric providers for evaluation and ongoing support.
Do you accept insurance?
Metanoia Therapy & Wellness operates primarily as a private-pay practice. Individual therapy sessions are $150 for a 50-minute session. We offer a limited number of sliding-scale appointments for clients experiencing financial hardship. We can also provide a detailed superbill that may be submitted to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We encourage you to contact us to discuss your options.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation to help you learn more about our services, ask questions, and determine whether our approach feels like the right fit for your needs.
Do you work with clients throughout California?
Yes. Because our practice is fully virtual, we are able to provide therapy services to individuals located anywhere within California. This allows clients to access specialized trauma-informed and somatic therapy regardless of where they live within the state.
